Fact Sheet on family law services now available
June 13, 2011

A new fact sheet has been produced by the Public Legal Education and Information Service of New Brunswick (PLEIS-NB) to explain family law services in New Brunswick to the public.

The need for this publication grew out of the confusion that individuals sometimes feel when attempting to find out information about what family law services are available and how they might access them.  For example, there are several toll-free lines to get family law assistance or services – one for family mediation, one for family law information, and one for making an appointment with a family advice lawyer.  But, if you happen to live in the Saint John region, these numbers do not apply as there is pilot family court project underway there and contact information for such services is different.

The fact sheet sets out information in a table that clearly identifies the name of the family law service, the agency or government department responsible for them, how the service might help and how to go about accessing them.

The fact sheet is being distributed to all the Family Division Courts, Legal Aid offices, and community agencies who deal with individuals experiencing family law problems.  It is also being shared with lawyers, SNB offices and libraries across the province.

PLEIS-NB is a non-profit, charitable organization that has been providing general information about the law to the public for 20 years. It receives funding and in-kind support from the New Brunswick Law Foundation, Justice Canada, and the New Brunswick Office of the Attorney General.

Copies of the new fact sheet are available by contacting PLEIS-NB at 506-453-5369, or by e-mailing pleisnb@web.ca.
